English Writing Abilities and Social Skills of Students Engaged in Collaborating Writing Using Google Docs
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to compare the English writing abilities and social skills of undergraduate students before and after learning collaborative writing in a Google Docs setting and in a face-to-face setting. The samples were 1 classroom of 34 undergraduate students majoring in English in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. They enrolled in a Paragraph Writing course in first semester of the 2023 academic year. They were divided into an experimental group learning in the Google Docs setting and a control group learning in the face-to-face setting. The study was conducted for 12 class sessions. Each session lasted three hours. The research instruments were four lesson plans, a writing test, and a social skills questionnaire. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation, paired sample t-test, and independent samples t-test. The results showed that (1) there was no significant difference in the writing abilities between the experimental group and the control group; and (2) the social skills of the experimental group were significantly higher than those of the control group at the 0.01 level of significance.
